Week Five

Post Game Comments: The loss to Stanwood was disappointing to say the least. Even though Coach Abrams, in his fourth year, was returning a playoff team of 2004 with ten starters we felt we had a good opportunity to be successful. The game started poorly and we just could not overcome a tough Stanwood football team, injuries, and our own mistakes. We played well at times but we had let downs in all phases of the game. You just can not win if you don't put it all together especially when you turn the ball over three times. We did have good play from some first time varsity players this year such as Kevin Warner, Danny Kondikoff, Jake Brauer, and Kolten Sisson. Congrats to them. We also had an outstanding performance from punter Aaron Lee who averaged over 48 yards a punt and put one inside the 10 yard line. The team's pride is hurt but we feel fortunate that this was a non-league and look to correct what we can control.

This Week's Preview: Kent Meridian is a physical team with a new determination. They are on a mission that I think they will accomplish - we are working on making sure that does not happen this week though. They are young in the line but are improving every week. Coach John Jarman (1st year) told me that he has 55 players lifting everyday during a zero hour class. We would love to have that next year at Kentwood. I know the strength gains will pay off by years end. They are strong at the skill positions with several tough runners (#2 Milan-Garcia, Brian, #20 Smith, Aaron, #44 Sagapoluete, Palaita-Toese , and #47 Fuiava, Paulo ) they also play outstanding defense. #10 Henry, Richard is an outstanding receiver. Their QB's #12 Lynd, Josh , and #4 Earle, Jesse are both tough competitors. The have had close games against Kentlake and Sumner. They are not to be taken lightly. After last week we will be looking to improve all areas of our game and get back on the winning track. Go Conks.

Future Conks: The Freshman are undefeated in play this year posting a 3-0 start. Coach Anderson is excited about this years team. The football knowledge of the boys is outstanding and the staff has been able to put in a lot of what our Varsity uses. They defeated Todd Beamer 34-6, Federal Way 20-0, and Decator 34-7. The are lead by a stingy defense anchored by #74 Hunter Blackmore in the line and #6 Tolliver Harden at inside linebacker. The secondary is outstanding with #5 Darius Coleman, #34 Artise Gauldin, and #9 Luke Angevine. The outside backers have also outstanding efforts from #32 Eric Shields and #88 Greg Humphreys. Several players have contributed to the outstanding start on defense and we want to invite you to come watch them play vs. Kent Meridian @ French Field at 4pm Oct 3rd where they will be looking to go 4-0 and avenge a loss to the Royals in 2004. (The offense will be highlighted next week).

Assistant Spotlight: Coach John Anderson is the head Freshman Football Coach in his second year. His record is 8-3 as head coach at Kentwood High School. He comes to us from Cedar heights where he coached for three years. John played football and wrestled for Kentwood in 1996 and was a part of the 8-1 Division Champs team that year. He started a Corner on a defense that led the state in overall rushing defense (56 yards a game). He teaches at the Freshman level in the Social Studies department.
