Week Eight
Post Game Comments: What a great high school football game. It was definitely a playoff atmosphere. Two quality teams exposing each others weaknesses and playing very hard all night long. It was a tough loss knowing that we had our opportunities especially against such a tough opponent. We knew the game would be exciting and emotional. Tahoma played well enough to win at the right times and we did not. It is as simple as that. Did we play well enough to win? I think so, just not at the right times. The coaching staff wants to recognize Don Thomas and Anthony Belinski for their play on defense. Steve Delvo and Aaron Lee were outstanding on Special teams and Chris Talic as another good performance on offense. Tim Reavis has been a rock on special teams all year as well. That is our second loss of the season, but we are now controlling our own destiny and that is what would have happened if we were undefeated so we are pleased about that. I think the two losses have helped educate our team and we look forward to the challenge this week against Kentridge.
This Week's Preview: Kentridge Chargers are currently (3-4) in 2005 having defeated their last opponent Auburn Riverside 28-21. In their last three losses they were outscored by a total of 19 points. They could very easily by 6-1 or 5-2 heading into this game. Coach Marty Osborn in his 15th year is 94-47 had a very talented team with nine returning starters (6 offense, 3 defense): RB/ILB Kenny Orezca, 5-10, 220, Sr.; QB/DB/P Jake Fletcher, 6-2, 185, Jr.; OT/DE Jerry Parker, 6-3, 243, Sr.; OT Pat Dullenty, 6-1, 255, Sr.; TE Austin Gronotte, 5-11, 195, Sr.; RB/DB Ale Rosa, 5-11, 180, Sr.; WB Greg Bolden, 5-11, 175, Jr.; QB/DB Brandon Turner, 6-2, 170, So. RB Leonard Harris, 5-7, 155, Sr.; WB/OLB Chad Cozean, 5-10, 185, Jr.; RB/ILB Chris Robinson, 5-10, 221, Jr. Their Quarterback Jake Fletcher is a dynamic player at that position. He throws the ball well and is an excellent runner. The Chargers are massive up front AGAIN. And they are very sound. It will not be easy in the trenches on either side of the ball. We are going to have another great effort by the line to win this game. They also have a very talented fullback Chris Robinson. He scored last year against us on a 30 yard trap play. Leonard Harris is outstanding as well playing both running back and receiver at times. It will be another exciting Kent football game. Kentwood and Kentridge is a special rivalry and I expect nothing by the best effort from both squads.
Future Conks: The Junior Varsity (4-3) won its second game in a row defeating the Tahoma Bears JV 28-20. Tyler Weinbrecht scored on a fourth down play. After receiving a ten yard catch he broke a tackle and raced for the score. The pass was from Travis Long. Danny Kondikoff also played well running from 40 yards out and also scoring on a QB sneak. Justin Jeana also had a played a key role by forcing a fumble inside the Tahoma five yard line that would lead to a touchdown. Congratulations to the Junior Varsity for winning a hard fought game. The team looks forward to the match up against Kentridge next Monday @ French Field.
The Freshman Team won their sixth contest in a row to remain undefeated (6-0). The score verses Tahoma Freshman was 21-3. The victory avenges a lost to the Tahoma team from last years eighth grade season. Darius Coleman scored twice and Artise Gauldin scored once. This sets up showdowns between the last two Kent schools over the next two weeks. The team has a goal to go undefeated. It won't be easy but the team is working hard and looks forward to the challenge. Great job defense for shutting down the Bears offense.
Assistant Spotlight: Coach Jeff Moore currently coaches for the Kentwood Varsity Squad. Coach Moore works with the offensive line and the defensive line. He also focuses on the deep snappers. Coach Moore is in his second go around with the Conquerors. He coaches for three years in the 90's and is now is his second year in 2005. He left Kentwood and coached for three years with the Kent Meridian Royals under Coach Clancy who is the current head coach at Auburn Mountain View High School. Coach Moore has also worked for a number of years with the Kent Knights program and has a close relationship with a number of boys that played in that organization.

Week Seven
Post Game Comments: The Enumclaw victory was satisfying in the result but left our team wondering how good we could. We played very hard and did a really good job at times. The Defense lead by Sean Jones and Anthony Belinski was flying around. Except for one drive of 50 yards aided by pass interference, the defense held Enumclaw to 30 yards of offense. That is outstanding considering the running backs they have. Our offense showed flashes of what can happen if you execute. We scored on the first play of both halves. We rushed for 300 yards with three different backs carrying the load. Those were seniors - Sean Jones 47 yards, Curron Singleton - 51 yards 2 TD’s, and Derek Hartwigsen 115 yards 1 TD. Sean also showed he could return punts taking one back for a touchdown in the third quarter. Peter Logar has his best game at center and Steven Warner added 75 yards and a TD. All and all we overcame out own mistakes and finished with a strong second half. Several boys contributed and it will take that kind of effort next week verse Tahoma. Go Conks.
This Week's Preview: The Tahoma Bears are coming into this game with a lot of momentum. I think it is momentum that is been building for several years now. They have an outstanding coach in Tony Davis; I have a lot of respect for him. He has been at Tahoma for 12 years and has done an outstanding job. They have 10 returning starters from last year’s league Championship 8-3 ball club. Notable are #82 TE/DE Kevin Kooyman, 6-6, 215, Sr.; #65 OT Matt Dudley, 6-2, 267, Sr.; #16 WR/CB Kyle Laukala, 6-0, 195, Sr.; #59 LB Walter Helm-Buckman, 5-9, 200, Sr.; #45 TE/LB Tom Wicks, 6-1, 190, Sr.; #51 C/LB Jake Giannandrea, 6-0, 200, Sr.; #5 RB/LB Shane Baker, 5-11, 185, Sr.; #79 OG/DE Chris Powers, 6-3, 230, Jr. They play very good defense only allowing one team to score more than once this year on them. Offensively they have exploded in the last two weeks scoring 87 and allowing O. Beating them will be a major accomplishment. We will have to make the most of our opportunities and win the field position game. It will take a special effort. The boys are up to the task and look forward to playing some old fashion Kentwood football. This type of game brings the best out of Kentwood teams.
Future Conks: The Junior Varsity (3-3) got back on the winning track with a victory over Enumclaw at Pete's Pool outscoring the Hornets 20-8. Travis Long would have a good night with two touchdown passes to Chance Matsuoka and Ryan Patterson. Jesse Merryman would also have another quality outing have the hit of the night on a HB screen and by scoring one rushing touchdown. The JV team is working hard to make the most of the remaining games so they can join the Varsity in the playoffs. Our program's goal is to make JV as much like a Varsity experience as possible. That way they are prepared to enter a game at the Varsity level. The Coaching staff feels this years JV squad is leaning some valuable lessons and leaders are coming to the front. This will help tremendously for next year. The team looks forward to the match up against Tahoma next Monday @ French Field.
The Freshman Team won their fifth contest in a row to remain undefeated (5-0). The score verses Enumclaw Freshman was 42-7. The Offense would have outstanding performances from all three Tailbacks Joe Angevine with one rushing touchdown, Artise Gualdin with three and very hard running by Darius Coleman who was pulled after a slight injury. Joe Angevine, also had a interception for a touchdown as the defense would have recorded its second shutout of the season if not for a kick off return for a touchdown. The Offensive line had an outstanding day as well with quality performances from Greg Humphreys and Hunter Blackmore. The freshman program has not only the best record this season but the best cumulative GPA with a combined GPA of 2.98 after the first grade check. They have also started a before school tutoring session Tues thru Thursday in Coach Buckner's classroom. (Great Job Guys) The freshman will play @ Tahoma next Monday.
Assistant Spotlight: Coach Justin Buckner is the freshman offensive line coach and the Defensive Coordinator. He is in his third year at Kentwood and in his fourth year of coaching football. Coach Buckner also helps the Varsity in scouting, video highlights, and on game night assists by working with Coach Norris and the defensive play calls. Coach Buckner is a three sport coach - football, wrestling, and track. He is also a Freshman Social Studies teacher as well as an English teacher. HE is a tireless worker when it comes to student athletes. He helps keep tabs on varsity players as well as run freshman team tutoring table in the mornings before school. Did you know that he played at Linfield College, in Oregon? He also graduated from Jefferson High School in Federal Way. We are lucky to have him at Kentwood.
Last week correction Chris Bishop is in his ninth year of coaching.

Week Six
Post Game Comments: This win was a very proud win for myself and the coaching staff. We asked the team to focus on improving in every phase of the game this week and we felt that we did. It was a game that was dangerous in that you had a team that had been on the edge of winning three out of four games. It was a game we were supposed to win but we had a lot of questions to answer on the field with people in back up roles. The Royals played hard the whole game. Hat off to there young players and good athletes, but we have good young players and athletes as well. The defense did a nice job adjusting to things we had not prepared for. Offensively we scored on our first three possession until the yellow flags started coming out. In the second half we went right back to work and scored on our first possession. Leading 28-0 we were able to get back up players on the field and they were able to keep up the intensity. Once the score was 42-0 after a great run by Sean Jones, we were able to get nearly every player on the field. The coaching staff would like to recognize outstanding performances by, Alex Phillips (6 of 6 on PAT), Kevin Warner (2 TD's passing, 1 rushing), Alex Muehle (7 tackles, 3 Traps, 1 caused fumble, 1 recovered fumble). We did recieve a lot of infractions and that will be a focal point this week. We are happy to be on the winning track and we are going to build off this win and look to improve this comming week.
This Week's Preview: Enumclaw is coming into this game with a lot of confidence after somewhat of an upset last week vs. Auburn Riverside. They have a young talented group of boys with enough senior leadership at key positions to make them formidable. Their key players are #33
Burcell, Chris 5' 9" 190 Sr. FB,LB and #34
Ramberg, Kyte 5' 10" 180 Jr. RB,DB, also #8 Larned, Connor and #89
Koopman, John 6' 0" 180 Jr. WR,DB are the go to guys at reciever. The line is big and physical and they will pound you if you let them, so we will need to be sound up front. Defensively they are very disciplined and make you work for you points. They held Auburn Riverside to just 3 field goals last week. We look for the game to be a bench mark for where we are as we head into the second half of our schedule. We know that we control our own destiny and we are working hard to keep it.
Future Conks: The Junior Varsity lost a tough game to am improved Kent Meridian JV squad 18-15. The first half left little to be desired with the Conks down 18-7. The Offense and Defense came out in the second half on fire. Hard running by Danny Kondikoff and Jesse Merryman put the Conks with in a touchdown. A key interception by Ryan Patterson with 3 minutes to go gave us the ball inside the 30 yard line but the Royals would hold on down. The defense would hold and the Offense would be the ball back win a 1:30 and go right back down the field only to be held on downs again at the one yard line as time expired. It was a hard fought game and the coaches were glad to see the boys respond in the second half. Even though the team lost some leaders showed themselves in the second half. The team looks to regroup again Enumclaw next Monday @ Enumclaw.
The Freshman Team won thier fourth in a row to remain undefeated (4-0). The score would be 46-6 as the offense would have its way. Justin Brendegard and Luke Angevine run the QB duties for the high scoring freshman squad that has outscored its opponents 129-19. Darius Coleman, Joe Angevine, and Artise Gualdin have been outstanding at TB, and Bryan Carlson, Micheal Day, and Steven Warner have all shared time at Fullback. The line is anchored by, Tim Ballas, Hunter Blackmore, Brian Glaholt, Greg Humphreys, and Greg Smith. There have also been a ton of other contributors the this great start. The Coaching staff is proud of these young men and the postive attitude they have in practice and the example most of the are setting in the school. Both of these quality have been translating into wins this season.
Assistant Spotlight: Chris Bishop in his first year at Kentwood is coaching inside linebackers and offensive line. He comes to us having coached some thirteen years. He was defensive Coordinator at Meadowdale High School for three years. Spent some time coaching at Western Univiersity. From there he coached defensive ends and was incharge of recruiting at Idaho University and also spent some time in Europe coaching football in the German football league. Coach Bishop as made an immediate impact on the team with his intensity and knowledge. Did you know that he is the brother of explayer Kentwood football player Aaron Egbert and current junior rugby player Sarah Egbert.
