Week 5 Preview

Post Game Thoughts: The Kentridge Game was a big challenge for our football team in a lot of ways. Not only are the Chargers a quality program but they were coming off a loss to Tahoma, we had lost one of our Captains and starting Quarterback, and we were starting three sophomores on the offense for their first career start. I really don’t know if the scenario could have played out any better. We new were going to start off slow as any team might in a situation like that. But to have our defense come out and handle situation after situation in the first half where are backs were against the wall was outstanding. We had standout performances by Nick Zografos who had a career high of 13 tackles and an interception, Kolten Sisson who had 12 tackles in as many weeks, and Demetrius Bronson who had two interceptions with one being for a touchdown. The offense would get its feet on the ground in the second half. We had quality running from Cory Rodriguez and Demetrius Bronson in the second half. We would rush for over 130 yards in the second half alone. Kentridge fought back and made some amazing plays, but it was a little to late – they allowed young players to gain confidence and then it was too late. Luke Angevine a great job in his first start at quarterback as did Hunter Blackmore at center, Richard Bracknell at Guard, and Greg Humphreys at tackle. I am very proud of the team and the overall performance of the program. This was a big win which puts us tied for the league.

Players of the Game Offense: Kolten Sisson / Hunter Blackmore – Greg Humphreys

Raiders, who won three division games last season for first time since 1997, love to throw. Stark passed for 1,281 yards in '05. They lead the league in passing offense totally 248 yards per outing. Tahuj Sonj led the league in receptions last year and is currently third with 21 receptions for 375 yards for an average of 17.9 yards. Angelo Harris also averages about 100 yards a game on offense. QB Taylor Stark leads the league in passing having thrown for 365 yards in one game. He also leads the league in Total offense averaging some 236 yards per contest. Their offense is something we do not see much of and it will be a tough challenge to contain the Raider weapons when they come into French Field. The team is improving so come out and watch the team play the Raiders at 7pm. Hope to see you there.

Future Conks Week 4

Future Conks: The Junior Varsity (3-0) took on Kentridge in a grunge match from Friday night. Both squads were big and physical. Just like the first game the JV would go into half with a 7-0 lead. This time it would be on a pass reception by Devon St. Clair from Jordan Brendegard covering about 20 yards. In the second half both teams found their feet offensively. The line for Kentwood was anchored by Mike Montgomery who played his best game of the season according to Coach Moore. Matt Landen and Kevin Price also had good performances on the offense. The protection improved allowed Jordan Boston to find Henry Everett in the back of the end zone for the team’s second score. Kentridge would mount a comeback by Joe Angevine would grind out the rest of the game with some tough running as a score to seal the victory. (Final Score JV 19 – KR 12) This was a big win and a payback from last year. Congratulations to the JV on getting off to a great start.

Players of the Game: Joe Angevine and Mike Montgomery

The Freshman Team (2-0) took on Todd Beamer’s freshmen squad at French Field. There were outstanding performances by a whole host of players as they played in front on the home stands. Allain Songco got the Conks on the board first with a 20 TD reception from Jordan Harris. Jhuavon Harrison and Ronnie Flowers would follow that up with two impressive runs off the left and right tackles. The second capping a 96 yard drive after an impressive sack by Jeremy Antonio to stop a Beamer drive. The drive was kept a live by a timely 3rd down catch by Songco that covered about 14 yards – he would leave the game with an ankle injury. Taylor Hughes anchored a tough defensive effort that kept the Beamer backs in check. In the second half Triston Askew would engineer the first drive with some outstanding athleticism and then Harrison would bust through again for a 38 yard TD run (27-0). After thee and out Nathan Herrick would block a Beamer punt that set up the young Conks deep in Beamer territory. Zach Corpus would take it in from three yards out. On the next possession Jordan Jainga would make a interception about the 30 yard line. A few plays later Ronnie Flowers would break off a 62 yard jaunt. He would later score again on a long distant run to finish the scoring – Final KW 48 – Beamer 13. Great Job Freshman! Next Week, Kent Meridian at Kentwood at 4 p.m.

Week 4 Preview

Post Game Comments: The Decatur game was a big win for our program. But before we get to that we lost a key player on our football team. Quaterback Kevin Warner (team captain) suffered torn exterior and interior ligaments to his left knee and will be out indefinitely. He is expected to be seen for a check up in a couple of weeks that will give the final evaluation to his status. He is a true competitor and continues to be an outstanding leader on our football team. We wish him a speedy recovery.

The game showed great improvement from our new players on Varsity and stellar performances from our senior leadership. Demetrius Bronson would end up with 246 yards on 16 carries and 4 touchdowns. The was due to outstanding performances from Matt Cleveland, Justin Shewey, Hunter Blackmore, Andre Hughes, Richard Bracknell, Dustin Sas, Greg Humphres, Tyler Weinbrecht, and Colten Hiles. Luke Angevine would make his debut and would perform well for three full quarters. The Defense met the challenge of stopping the league leading offense who was averaging 426 yards coming to just under 120 total yards. They were lead by Kolten Sisson who collected eleven tackles on the night. The night was highlighted by long runs and sound defensive play. The special teams play improved with good returns by Vinnie Fuoco and Darius Coleman. Jacob Standlee also performed well and exploded a 60 yard punt down to the two in the second half. All in all it was a step in the right direction for out ball club.

Chargers are a traditional power, having missed playoffs three years in a row they are looking to get back on the winning track. Even though they lost last week in a turover riddled football game they will be emotionally up for the game. They will be a tough opponent and it will take improvement from our team this week to meet that challenge. The players are excited and ready to play in this rivalry and to see where they stack up amonst the Kent Schools. They are getting better every week, so come support your Kentwood Conqueors the Friday.

Future Conks: the Junior Varsity (2-0) The Junior Varsity is off this week due to the fact that Decatur had to drop thier JV football program becuase of the lack of players turning out. We hope that they will be able to recover and field a team next year.

Players of the Game vs. South Kitsap Darius Coleman – Greg Humphreys
Players of the Game vs. Puyallup Jr. Guilden – Darius Coleman – Greg Humphreys

Furture Conks: the Freshman Team (1-0) finally was able to play against a real opponent this week. You could see the excitement in their eyes. They would take on Tahoma Freshman squad at Tahoma Junior High School. Tahoma would be playing their third game and our young Conks would be playing their first due to game drops by both Auburn High School, and White River High School. The game would start quick with a 60 yard run by Ronnie Flowers on the second play of the game. Both teams would settle down to a defense struggle. Outstanding corner play by Roy and Dela Cruz would keep their offense from taking off. Also outstanding play from OLB's gave our offense multiple opportunities. The offensive line anchored by Herrick at center would create another game for Flowers to run through for 60 yards early in the third quarter that would lead to another score. Triston Askew also stood out on defense as did Jordan Harris at Quarterback. The final was 12-0 (1-0). The next opponent will be Todd Beamer High School at French Field after the JV game on Monday. Great Job Guys!

Assistant Spotlight: Coach Brian Labelle is coaching for the first time in his career. Coach Labelle played at Kentwood and graduated in 1994. We would go on to be Captain of the Northwestern University Rose Bowl Squad and would spend some time in the NFL. Coach Labelle now works in Kent and is newly engaged. (Congratulations) We had a great desire to work with young people and to give back to the game. We feel very fortunate to have in working with our program this year. Did you know that Coach Labelle was playing during my first year of coaching at Kentwood? He is also one of the intial reasons we started the tradition of having a team meal before every game the football team plays.

Weeks 1 - 2 Preview of Week Three

Post Game Comments: Week 1 was a very big test of our young football team. We suited up 15 sophomore players our of 46 and traveled to South Kitsap. Their program is rich in tradition and would prove to be a big test. The defense got off to a rough start allowing the Wolves to score on their first possession, but would bounce back with Nick Z0grafos intercepting and scoring in his first start only to have it called back. The first have was a comedy of errors with another touchdown being called back and the offense running out of time inside the ten, right before half. The defense would play hard when it needed to and the offense showed great resolve coming back twice in the 4th quarter to tie the game and to put it into overtime. The Wolves would fumble on their third play from the ten and the Demetrius Bronson, who finished with 146 yards, would score the winning touchdown. Final Score 26-20 O.T. Standout performances were by Nick Zografos who had two interceptions but one was called back. Tyler Weinbrecht would have a 46 yard TD reception to tie the game in the fourth and played outstanding on defense. Chance Matsuoka would lead our team in tackles on defense, and a very commendable effort by Hunter Blackmore, Brian Glayholt, and Greg Humphreys who all saw considerable time as sophomores. Justin Shewey and Matt Cleveland anchored the line and Josh Loveland would collect two turnovers as well. We were pleased with Kevin Warner and his ability to run the offense in a pressure situation all night long. We also were especially excited about Jacob Standlee’s performance at punter. It was a quality win over a playoff caliber football team. This game will go along way into preparing us for our league opponents.

Players of the Game

Offense: Demetrius Bronson / Matt Cleveland
Defense: Chance Matsuoka / Tyler Weinbrecht
Special Teams: Jacob Standlee

Post Game Comments: Week 2 would find our young team playing against the #2 ranked Puyallup Vikings and Hall of Fame coach Tom Ingles. The game would pit a senior laden team verses the young offense and defensive lines of Kentwood. The Defense would do an outstanding job in the first half holding Puyallup to 45yards until a 35 yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left in the half. The score would be 7-7, with our staff realizing we missed a chance to get a lead into half time. The third quarter was much of the same, until a stretch of about 3 minutes where we would make key errors in the special teams and on offense that would give the Vikings a short field. They would take advantage of that score late in third (7-14). The offense never seemed to be clicking as we collected several delay of games and untimely penalties. However the game would not be decided until late on a 55 yard run to put the game out of reach 7-20. The game was closer than the score showed. I think this was a surprise to our team and our staff as we felt that we had a chance to win the game. We took some good lessons out of that loss and we learned a lot about what we needed to improve on as a team. This next week we are going to go back to the basics and develop more passion in our game and get back to Kentwood Football.

Players of the Game

Offense: Cory Rodriguez / Justin Shewey
Defense: Troy Romney / Tyler Weinbrecht
Special Teams: Colten Hiles

This Week's Preview: This weeks opponent is Decatur High School coached by Bill Heglar (4th year) who is on of the originators of the Wing-T in Washington. Returning starters (5 offense, 3 defense): QB/FS Gates, Brock 6-2, 210, Sr. is a quality athlete with good speed and a good arm. #70 OG/DT Steven Hagdahl, 6-2, 245 is a standout at Guard, Sr. #21 FB/LB Harris, Darrius , 5-10, 230, Sr. is leaded the league in rushing and #22 HB/CB King, Chase , 6’0 180 Jr is also a focal point of the offense. Decatur is averaging over 30 points a game and will be a great challenge for our defense. We feel we have a couple of really good running backs in Corey Rodriguez and Demetrius Bronson, so we will be excited about seeing how they stack up to the leading rushing leader and leagues best rushing attack. This is an important game for our program and the progress that we need to make as a team. So come out to French field tonight to support the Conks.

Future Conks: The Junior Varsity (2-0) The Junior Varsity is off to a great start winning their first two games verses two very talented and very large JV programs from South Kitsap and Puyallup. The South Kitsap Game would be won in the second half by standout performances by Steven Warner, Russ Davis, Chris Santiago, and Greg Humphreys on defense. Patrick Hoffman and Chandler Gray would also contribute with interceptions along with Joe Angevine who collected a big sack late in the game. Solid running by Darius Coleman who scored 2 TD’s to lead the Conks to a 28-14 win. The Puyallup game would prove to be tougher, but the victory would be attributed to better fitness as the Conks would pull away in the second half after being down 15-6. Kentwood would score 22 unanswered points by two 100 yard performance by Darius Coleman and Jr Guilden. The offense would get on track thanks to Luke Angivine and some circus catches by Danny Bounds and Henry Everett. IT was a passionate win and it would be Puyallup’s first JV loss in over two years. Way to go Guys

Furture Conks: The Freshman Team was schedule to play a nine game season, but due to unexpected program decision Auburn High School backed out of week one and White River backed out of week 2. As a staff we are frustrated but we did get the Freshman team in a Jamboree with Auburn, Auburn Riverside, and Charles Wright Academy. The Freshman Coaches were pleased to see the boys battle as we say great effort and hard play. The freshman offense will be introduced after their game on Monday with Tahoma. The following week will be the defense. We are excited about this year’s freshman team and the progress they have made. We have over 35 go to UPS camp and they have made amazing strides. They have been very patient and they are excited about getting the season started especially verses the Tahoma Bears. Come support the team on Monday at Tahoma Junior High at 4pm.

Assistant Spotlight: Coach Bill Ogle has been coaching at the Junior High level for six years over at Cedar Heights. He will be working with the running backs and the outside linebacker at the freshman level. We are excited about having him on staff because he as done an outstanding job over at Cedar Heights. Coach Ogle works for Boeing and commits time after work to be a coach at Kentwood. Did you know that Coach Ogle at Kentridge under Dave Lutes. He also had a son Ryan Ogle who played for Kentlake football and he has a daughter Amanda that plays rugby for the Kent Crusaders. He is married to Diane Ogle.
