Week 9 Preview
Post Game Comments for Week 7 & 8: Kent Meridian Game was a good win for our program. We had several situations during the course of the game that can help a team mature. We would move the ball early but it would be the Royals that would be inside our 1o yard line early aided by penalties and a turnover call that did not go our way. The defense stepped up big as Troy Romney aided by a deflection by Chance Matsuoka would intercept the ball in the endzone. The offense led by some ferocious blocking by Kolten Sisson would find the end zone but would have the 2 point play foiled. The defense would have to come up big with two goal line stands in the second period to keep the Royals scoreless before half. Needless to say we did not get off to a great start and we felt fortunate to be going into the half with a 6-0 lead. Demetrius Bronson would have a 200 yard night but it would be something he would have to work for. Matt Cleveland also did a great job on the night helping create holes for the running backs. After Luck Angevine would find the end zone in the fourth on an option to make it 18-0 the Royals would put together a nice drive that would end in a touchdown off of a busted coverage. The offense would then take the ball down the field to only kneel it at the end on the nine to end the game. Kentwood 18 KM 6
Players of the Game vs. Kent Meridian
Offense: Demetrius Bronson / Kolten Sisson / Matt Cleveland Defense: Kolten Sisson / Justin Shewey Special Teams: Jacob StandleeThe Tahoma Game was one of those games where if you don’t play your best it could snowball on you. The night started off well with the offense basically taking it to the Tahoma Defense. It would tragically end inside the Bear 20 with an unforced fumble that would give them the ball. The defense lead by Andre Hughes would play tough against the run all night. Tahoma would punt and aided by a big bounce would turn the field position game back into their favor. That would be the beginning an assortment of errors. Tahoma would make big plays on long third down plays that would set up the first score and then again for their second touchdown which was a sixty five yard touchdown pass. With the defense holding the Bears out two more time before giving up another touchdown the Conks would find themselves down 21-0 to nothing. The second half would be hard fought. The defense gave the offense opportunity to only have the ball be put on the ground for the Bears to recover. Some injuries in the half would see three secondary players come off the field along with a couple of offensive lineman. That being said those that came in gave a valiant effort. Even though the score does not show it, the team is not that far off from being the team they are capable of being. We saw some great effort by Chance Matsuoka who had 11 tackles, along with Andre Hughes would also have 11 tackles along with two traps and 1 sack on the night. But we know that this is a team game and it takes the team to win and to loose. We plan to stay on course and continue to improve this next week so we can get ready for the playoffs. Don’t expect the team to come out conservative this week. It is getting colder and the team is getting closer to the playoffs so we will be focused.
Players of the Game vs. TahomaOffense: Cory Rodriguez / Matt ClevelandDefense: Andre Hughes / Chance Matsuoka Special Teams: N/AThis Weeks Preview: Kentlake is coached by first year Head Coach Mike Sheppard 2-6 2006. Coach Sheppard has six Returning starters (2 offense, 4 defense): WR/S Dan Russell, 5-10, 180, Sr. who is coming off of a colar bone injury; OT/DL Shaun Hougardy, 6-0, 190, OL/ILB Taylor Firman, 6-0, 190, Sr.; RB/S Aaron Snyder, 5-9, 175, Sr.; TE/LB/P Matt Pacheko, 6-0, 200, Jr. who is an outstanding punter and plays rugby for the Kent Crusaders. Other key returners: RB/DB Chris Allen, 5-10, 180, Sr.; OC/DL Stephen Marsh, 5-10, 215, Sr.; QB Matt Smith, 6-1, 180, Jr. Impact newcomers include WR/DB Cody Arp, 5-8, 175, So.; RB/LB Travis Felchlin, 5-10, 175, So.; WR Tyler Wright, 5-10, 165, Fr.; QB Lewis Larsen, 5-11, 200, So.
Last year the JV and freshman teams both went 8-1. The team is young and talented. Shepard a former longtime assistant at both Kentlake and Kentridge is switching to "I" offense. Last week they defeated a very good offensive team in Thomas Jefferson. They did a really nice job managing the game. Their defense played very well and they are looking for a win this Thursday to make their season. We have a lot to play for and the team is going to be ready for this one as we need to get on a role before heading into the playoffs.
Future Conks: The Junior Varsity (7-0) The junior varsity would continue the dominance of the Kent Meridian Royals with a sound effort following the Varsity victory on Friday night. The JV came out focused and executed well on both offense and defense. The boys were focused from the beginning. We are seeing tremendous improvement and look forward to this team contribute to next years effort of varsity. The offense its usual strong performances by the offensive line as well as Tailback Luck Angevine. Darius Coleman also had a good performance. Defensively the Conks harassed the Royal quarterback all night. The final would be Kentwood 28 Kent Meridian 8. The long touch down came on a long kick off return down to the four yardline that would result in a touchdown. Congratulations on the win keep it going.
Players of the Game vs. Kent Meridian – Like Angevine / Steven Warner
The game against Tahoma was a hard hitting affair. The team had to travel to play at Tahoma High School. Coach Garrison the Junior Varsity Defensive Coordinator said it was the best the defense had played all year. And Coach Moore was really pleased with the Offensive line. The defense pinched a shutout for the first time this year and had a handful of contributors. Steven Warner anchored the middle but it would be the secondary that would play a big part with Robbie Morris and Ryan Nablach having their best games of the season. Robbie picked the Tahoma quarterback by taking the ball away for a much taller receiver. The offense missed several opportunities but would find pay dirt on a boot pass to Kevin Price in the corner of the end zone. Outstanding blocking up front would allow the offense to take control of the game. Justin Brendegard would break off a long on off an option play to put the game away. The Bears never really got on track as the offense grounded out another win. Kentwood 14 Tahoma 0. Congratulations to the Junior Varsity, who will be playing for the league championship this next week vs. the Kentlake Falcons.
Player of the Game vs. Tahoma – Justin Brendegard / Dustin Sas / Robbie MorrisConks: the Freshman Team (5-1) The Freshman Football Team improved to 5-0 with a 44-14 drubbing of the Federal Way Eagles. The KW offense scored 44 points for the second straight game (third 40+ point game of the year), and the Conks are now averaging an astounding 36 points a game. The game got off on the right foot as TB Ronnie Flowers took the pitch on the first play of the game 60 yards for a touchdown. This was just the first of four touchdowns for Flowers who ran away from and over the top of several defenders throughout the game. The offensive line shined again, giving the running backs all kinds of room to maneuver. WR Allain Songco tacked on a 35 yard touchdown reception from Jordan Harris by going up and over the corner attempting to cover him. TB J’Hauvon Harrison rounded out the scoring by marching KW down the field and then punching in the TD from the 5 yard line. The defensive side of the ball was dominated by the outstanding play of SS Tristan Askew. Askew not only made several solo tackles and big hits, but also manage to pick off two Eagle passes. ILB Bryant “The Baron” Von Englenberg also played a solid game on defense, locking down the middle of the field. Kevin Massimino finished off the defensive fireworks with a late game interception to seal Federal Way’s fate.
In their sixth official game of the season the freshmen would meet their match. It was one of those games that you try to warn an undefeated team about, but until you are in one it is hard to realize. The young Conks got off to a slow start with plenty of opportunities missed on Offense as well as Special Teams. Even the defense had a tough time tackling the talented back of the Chargers. In the second half the Conks came to life overcoming penalties and miscues to pull within 7 points, but the Chargers would respond. IT was good to see the kids fight back in the second half but it would not be enough as the Conks were left shaking their head. This will be a heated rivalry for years to come. Kentwood 20 Kentridge 36 Next week the Conquerors take on a Kentlake at Kentlake High School.
Assistant Spotlight: Coach Garrison is our current outside linebacker coach at the varsity level and also is the Defensive Coordinator for the undefeated Junior Varsity program. Coach Garrison also teaches Chemistry and does an outstanding job working with our academic issues on a football team. Did you know that coach Garrison played running back in high school and ran track. We would later go on to the University of Washington State. Did anyone see him at the Cougar’s win on Saturday verses the Oregon Ducks? His wife is a Duck Grad. I sure that made for a great ride home. Ha

Week 7 Preview
Post Game Comments: The Federal Way outcome was a disappointing loss to say the least. That is not to say that they played an outstanding game because they did. But to have so many breakdowns in ever phase of the game was rare to see on a Kentwood football field. As the head coach I have to take a look at the overall preparation and find ways to bring more focus and competition so that does not happen. The game got off to a rough start at we turned the ball over three times in the first half that would lead to 2 Federal Touchdowns. They took advantage of a roughing the snapper and a busted coverage to take a 14-0 half time lead. The team would respond with 14 points in the first three minutes of the second half with some outstanding running by Demetrius Bronson and a fantastic punt return by Vinnie Fuoco down to the 2 yard line. But that would be wiped out by a breakdown in special teams – a 90 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, only the three in my 12 years at Kentwood. We would come right back and take the lead 22-21, but to only have them score again from 75 yards out. They made some really big plays as important times and we just could not keep the pressure on. There was 44 points scored in the third quarter alone. We will take a lot from this game and look to improve this week. This is not the type of performance that we will accept in a win or a loss.
Players of the Game Offense: Demetrius Bronson / Matt ClevelandDefense: Kolten Sisson / Tyler Weinbrecht Special Teams: Vinnie FuocoThis Weeks Preview: Kent Meridian is coached by John Jarman (2nd year), 2-8 2005: 2-8, 1-8. Coach Jarman has 11 returning starters (6 offense, 5 defense). The have only won one game this year but they are playing better and better every week. They gave Tahoma all they could handle and the game came down to the very last play. He has the Royals believing in themselves and playing up to the talent level in that school. The returning players include: OC Braysen Deering, 6-2, 220, Jr.; OT Denzel Johnson, 6-0, 280, Jr.; OT Joel Kendrick, 6-2, 250, Sr.; OG Jay Hufana, 5-11, 240, Sr.; OG Lorenzo Cooper, 5-11, 260, Sr.; WR Kevin Voss, 6-5, 195, Sr.; WR/LB David Over, 6-1, 185, Sr.; DE Jason Thomas, 6-3, 235, Sr.; DE Isaiah Walker, 6-2, 220, So; DB Nigel Banister, 5-11, 170, Sr.; LB Ahmed Hirei, 6-5, 200, Sr. Other key returners: TE Sean Harris, 6-3, 195, Jr.; LB Johnny Wilson, 6-2, 215, Jr.; QB Jesse Earle, 6-1, 175, Jr.; WR Andre' Moore, 5-11, 160, Jr.; RB Stephon Johnson, 5-10, 200, Jr.
That group of juniors is an outstanding group. Earle has done a great job at QB running the multi formation offense of the Royals and Johnny Wilson is regarded as one of the top junior LBers in the United States. They are starting to jell and they are competing hard in every game. Something all the teams in the SPSL do. I have a lot of respect for coach Jarmen and the work his staff has done to make Kent Meridian a quality program. It will be a challenge and a true test for our ball club after last week. WE ARE DETERMINED to get back on the winning track.
Future Conks: The Junior Varsity (5-0) was able to get some revenge on the Federal Way Eagles with a 28-6 victory. The Conks had their usual ground game with good running by Darius Coleman and Joe Angevine. But this night would also see the Quarterbacks and Recievers get into the act. Danny Bounds (10th) would have a break out game scoring twice. The most spectacular one came on a reverse pass by Jordan Boston who went in as a receiver. Jordan would take the pitch and find Danny in the end zone. The offensive line is really coming together. Matt Landen (10th), Kyle Guinn (11th), Dustin Sas (11th) and Mike Montgomery (11th) have really pulled things together. The defense played well with Russ Davis, Chris Santiago, Henry Everett, and good secondary performance. Kevin Price is also becoming one of our best blockers. It is really great to see those guys mature.
Players of the Game vs. Federal Way – Danny Bounds / Jordan Boston / Darius Coleman
Furture Conks: the Freshman Team (4-0) had another good outing with a 44-12 win over Thomas Jefferson on Monday. The line play was the story of this game, with the Conk line playing their best game of the season so far. This led to 6 rushing touchdowns in all, with many of those runs also being sprung with the help of the receiving corps. Tailback Ronnie Flowers led the charge with two touchdowns including an 80 yard scamper on the 2nd offensive play of the game. QB Tristan Askew swept his way to two touchdowns as well, even tacking on two two-point conversions. TB J'Hauvon Harrison ran "power" to perfection, slicing through the defense for chunks of yardage and one TD. Finishing off the scoring was FB Derek Thatch, who busted a long trap for 50 yards before being tackled short of the goal line. Thatch punched in the last touchdown from 5 yards out on the next play. Jordan Harris was 4-4 on extra points to round out the scoring. The freshmen take on Federal Way next Monday at 4 pm at home.
Assistant Spotlight: Coach Jason Wisor is in his second year at Kentwood. He coaches the offensive and defensive line for the freshman team. Coach Wisor is a Social Studies teacher at Kentwood High School. He teaches Current World Issues and American Government/History. He is also an assistant coach for the girl’s softball team. Coach Wisor has been a great addition to our program and the school. He helps scout for the Varsity and he is tireless in helping break down each week’s opponent. He is also a familiar face at all spring sport home games as he is one of our most active game supervisors. Did you know that Coach Wisor went to Shaddle Park High School in Spokane? He also helped coach football and baseball at SPHS. We are really happy he is apart of the Kentwood Football Staff.

Week 6 Preview
Post Game Comments: The Thomas Jefferson game was an exciting game for those that came to watch last Thursday. It was full of offense. Even though the score at half time was 27-6, both offenses moved the ball up and down the field. Demetrius Bronson would finish the night with 180 yards at half time and would be pulled from the game. This was aided by good physical play from the line that recorded at least 9 pancakes in the game and was led by Matt Cleveland who recorded three. Luke Angevine would come into his own passing for 4 of 5 for three touchdowns and 87 yards, all of these are career highs for the sophomore. Danny Kondikoff would also have a good showing reeling in two of those touchdown passes. Cory Rodriguez would do well on both sides of the ball. He rushed for 70 plus yards and recorded a sack of defense. Andre Hughes would have one of his better nights leading a defense that held TJ to minus yards rushing up until the middle of the third quarter. The defense would record 4 sacks on the night. George Mesa would record his first ever in his first game as a Conk. Brandon Cottingham also performed well on special teams. The score was 46-6 and then we had the opportunity to get all the players in, which is a luxury in this league. All in all the team was pleased with its performance and happy to see the younger players get in. We finished the game healthy and remaining tied for the league lead. Good job.
Players of the Game
Offense: Luke Angevine / Matt Cleveland - Justin Shewey
Defense: Chance Matsuoka / Andre Hughes
Special Teams: Brandon Cottingham
This Weeks Preview: Federal Way is lead by Coach John Meagher (9th year), 36-45 2005: 6-4, 6-3 in SPSL South. He has a very young team that will be a force for the next couple of years. His returning starters (5 offense, 5 defense): QB/SS Donny McConnaughy, 6-0, 185, Sr.; TE/NG Brandon Williams, 6-0, 235, Sr.; OC/DL Kline Wright, 6-0, 265, Sr.; OG/DL Anthony Hutchinson, 5-10, 200, Sr.; WR/FS Aaron Broussard, 6-4, 185, Jr.; FB/OLB Andy Racus, 6-0, 200, Sr.; WR/QB/OLB Justin Southern, 5-10, 180, Jr. are seasoned after just missing the playoffs in 2005. They have a big physically line with two outstanding receivers. Other key returnees include WR/DB Graylin James, 6-0, 170, Jr.; WR/DB Justin Amundsen, 5-10, 170, Jr. They have a host of underclassman playing a major role this year with OL/LB Andru Pulu, 6-3, 225, So.; RB/LB Andre Barrington, 6-2, 180, So. And don’t forget about #27 at running back, he is an outstanding freshman.
The Eagles have been dominating before their game against Tahoma and they will want to get back on the winning track. Their defense has been solid most of the season and the really spread you out on defense. This will be a renewed rivalry that brings out the best in both teams. Our team is set on getting better each week. Our schedule demands that we do, so come support your Kentwood Conquerors the Thursday @ Federal Way.
Future Conks: The Junior Varsity (4-0) The Junior Varsity had to travel to Orting for a impromptu game because of the canceled JV game verses Thomas Jefferson, who like Decatur had to cancel their JV football schedule due to lack of numbers. The Cardinals who varsity is 4-1 scored first taking the young Conks by surprise. The defense would regroup with solid play by the secondary and outside linebackers. Joe Angevine and Darius Coleman would carry the load on offense and Jordan Boston and Jordan Brendegard would share the duties at Quarterback. Coach Wells and Coach Garrison both commented on the quality of play by both teams and they were especially proud of how the team responded after being down 7-8 and half. After two scores by a solid ground game, the defense would find the end zone off an interception in the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring. The final was 28-8. Great job
Players of the Game vs. Orting – Luke Angevine / Darius Coleman / Conk Secondary
Furture Conks: the Freshman Team (3-0) would extend their winning streak to 11 games dating back to the beginning of 2005. This time it would be Kent Meridian. The Conks would have another fine outing by Ronnie Flowers who scored from 70, 40, and 20 yards. J. Harrison would also play wll as the offense rushed for over 300 yards. Harris would find Allain Songco for a 45 yard pass and catch to help put the game out of reach. Dela Cruz and the “Barron” would both have INTs and two touchdowns were called back. The team had new players step up and play well namely Dustin Koleman who gathered a sack and a blocked punt that led to a score. Tristan Askew would also find the end zone on a sweep that was opened by Dustin Koleman who had a great game on offense. TJ Markas led the line with several knockdowns. The freshman coaching staff are excited about the teams progress – they are a fun group to watch as they score points in bunches. This is the second week in a row that they have scored over 30 points. The final was 33-8. Great job guys!
