Week 9 Preview

Post Game Comments for Week 7 & 8: Kent Meridian Game was a good win for our program. We had several situations during the course of the game that can help a team mature. We would move the ball early but it would be the Royals that would be inside our 1o yard line early aided by penalties and a turnover call that did not go our way. The defense stepped up big as Troy Romney aided by a deflection by Chance Matsuoka would intercept the ball in the endzone. The offense led by some ferocious blocking by Kolten Sisson would find the end zone but would have the 2 point play foiled. The defense would have to come up big with two goal line stands in the second period to keep the Royals scoreless before half. Needless to say we did not get off to a great start and we felt fortunate to be going into the half with a 6-0 lead. Demetrius Bronson would have a 200 yard night but it would be something he would have to work for. Matt Cleveland also did a great job on the night helping create holes for the running backs. After Luck Angevine would find the end zone in the fourth on an option to make it 18-0 the Royals would put together a nice drive that would end in a touchdown off of a busted coverage. The offense would then take the ball down the field to only kneel it at the end on the nine to end the game. Kentwood 18 KM 6

The Tahoma Game was one of those games where if you don’t play your best it could snowball on you. The night started off well with the offense basically taking it to the Tahoma Defense. It would tragically end inside the Bear 20 with an unforced fumble that would give them the ball. The defense lead by Andre Hughes would play tough against the run all night. Tahoma would punt and aided by a big bounce would turn the field position game back into their favor. That would be the beginning an assortment of errors. Tahoma would make big plays on long third down plays that would set up the first score and then again for their second touchdown which was a sixty five yard touchdown pass. With the defense holding the Bears out two more time before giving up another touchdown the Conks would find themselves down 21-0 to nothing. The second half would be hard fought. The defense gave the offense opportunity to only have the ball be put on the ground for the Bears to recover. Some injuries in the half would see three secondary players come off the field along with a couple of offensive lineman. That being said those that came in gave a valiant effort. Even though the score does not show it, the team is not that far off from being the team they are capable of being. We saw some great effort by Chance Matsuoka who had 11 tackles, along with Andre Hughes would also have 11 tackles along with two traps and 1 sack on the night. But we know that this is a team game and it takes the team to win and to loose. We plan to stay on course and continue to improve this next week so we can get ready for the playoffs. Don’t expect the team to come out conservative this week. It is getting colder and the team is getting closer to the playoffs so we will be focused.

This Weeks Preview: Kentlake is coached by first year Head Coach Mike Sheppard 2-6 2006. Last year the JV and freshman teams both went 8-1. The team is young and talented. Shepard a former longtime assistant at both Kentlake and Kentridge is switching to "I" offense. Last week they defeated a very good offensive team in Thomas Jefferson. They did a really nice job managing the game. Their defense played very well and they are looking for a win this Thursday to make their season. We have a lot to play for and the team is going to be ready for this one as we need to get on a role before heading into the playoffs.

Future Conks: The Junior Varsity (7-0) The junior varsity would continue the dominance of the Kent Meridian Royals with a sound effort following the Varsity victory on Friday night. The JV came out focused and executed well on both offense and defense. The boys were focused from the beginning. We are seeing tremendous improvement and look forward to this team contribute to next years effort of varsity. The offense its usual strong performances by the offensive line as well as Tailback Luck Angevine. Darius Coleman also had a good performance. Defensively the Conks harassed the Royal quarterback all night. The final would be Kentwood 28 Kent Meridian 8. The long touch down came on a long kick off return down to the four yardline that would result in a touchdown. Congratulations on the win keep it going.

The game against Tahoma was a hard hitting affair. The team had to travel to play at Tahoma High School. Coach Garrison the Junior Varsity Defensive Coordinator said it was the best the defense had played all year. And Coach Moore was really pleased with the Offensive line. The defense pinched a shutout for the first time this year and had a handful of contributors. Steven Warner anchored the middle but it would be the secondary that would play a big part with Robbie Morris and Ryan Nablach having their best games of the season. Robbie picked the Tahoma quarterback by taking the ball away for a much taller receiver. The offense missed several opportunities but would find pay dirt on a boot pass to Kevin Price in the corner of the end zone. Outstanding blocking up front would allow the offense to take control of the game. Justin Brendegard would break off a long on off an option play to put the game away. The Bears never really got on track as the offense grounded out another win. Kentwood 14 Tahoma 0. Congratulations to the Junior Varsity, who will be playing for the league championship this next week vs. the Kentlake Falcons.

Conks: the Freshman Team (5-1) The Freshman Football Team improved to 5-0 with a 44-14 drubbing of the Federal Way Eagles. The KW offense scored 44 points for the second straight game (third 40+ point game of the year), and the Conks are now averaging an astounding 36 points a game. The game got off on the right foot as TB Ronnie Flowers took the pitch on the first play of the game 60 yards for a touchdown. This was just the first of four touchdowns for Flowers who ran away from and over the top of several defenders throughout the game. The offensive line shined again, giving the running backs all kinds of room to maneuver. WR Allain Songco tacked on a 35 yard touchdown reception from Jordan Harris by going up and over the corner attempting to cover him. TB J’Hauvon Harrison rounded out the scoring by marching KW down the field and then punching in the TD from the 5 yard line. The defensive side of the ball was dominated by the outstanding play of SS Tristan Askew. Askew not only made several solo tackles and big hits, but also manage to pick off two Eagle passes. ILB Bryant “The Baron” Von Englenberg also played a solid game on defense, locking down the middle of the field. Kevin Massimino finished off the defensive fireworks with a late game interception to seal Federal Way’s fate.

In their sixth official game of the season the freshmen would meet their match. It was one of those games that you try to warn an undefeated team about, but until you are in one it is hard to realize. The young Conks got off to a slow start with plenty of opportunities missed on Offense as well as Special Teams. Even the defense had a tough time tackling the talented back of the Chargers. In the second half the Conks came to life overcoming penalties and miscues to pull within 7 points, but the Chargers would respond. IT was good to see the kids fight back in the second half but it would not be enough as the Conks were left shaking their head. This will be a heated rivalry for years to come. Kentwood 20 Kentridge 36 Next week the Conquerors take on a Kentlake at Kentlake High School.

Assistant Spotlight: Coach Garrison is our current outside linebacker coach at the varsity level and also is the Defensive Coordinator for the undefeated Junior Varsity program. Coach Garrison also teaches Chemistry and does an outstanding job working with our academic issues on a football team. Did you know that coach Garrison played running back in high school and ran track. We would later go on to the University of Washington State. Did anyone see him at the Cougar’s win on Saturday verses the Oregon Ducks? His wife is a Duck Grad. I sure that made for a great ride home. Ha
